The EMA (Elastic Mandibular Advancement) appliance is a custom oral appliance used in dental sleep medicine to manage snoring and obstructive sleep apnea in appropriately selected patients. Separate upper and lower trays are made to fit the patient’s teeth, then connected with elastic straps that gently position the lower jaw forward during sleep.
Advancing the mandible can increase airway space and reduce the tendency of the tongue and surrounding tissues to collapse backward. The EMA design uses interchangeable strap lengths and strengths so the treating clinician can titrate advancement while balancing comfort, jaw mobility, and therapeutic response.
This is a prescription-style, custom-fitted therapy that requires professional evaluation, impressions or a digital scan, delivery, adjustment, and follow-up. It should not be self-adjusted beyond the plan established by the treating provider.
